Why Retin-A and Lasers Don’t Mix

Here at Heights Aesthetic Laser Center, we offer a handful of treatments that use laser technology. These treatments include laser facials, skin resurfacing treatments, laser hair removal, and laser tattoo removal. Before receiving any of these treatments it's important you come to your appointment prepared. Avoiding the use of certain products is key to ensure you have the best results and don’t experience any side effects. Our laser treatments are safe and have little to no downtime when precautions are taken.

Before receiving any treatment with laser, it is important to avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen for two weeks leading into your treatment. It is also necessary to stop the use of any products that contain Retin-A, tretinoin, lactic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and benzoyl peroxide. Basically, any products that contain alpha or beta hydroxy acids. Avoid chemical peels and physical exfoliants as well. Patients being treated with Accutane do not qualify for laser treatments as severe interactions can occur.

Why is it Important to Stop Using Retin-A Before Receiving Treatment?

With any product that contains alpha or beta hydroxy acids, including Retin-A, it is very important to discontinue use one to two weeks leading up to your laser treatment with us. This is because Retin-A is designed to help the skin renew itself. The use of Retin-A prior to treatment may make your skin more sensitive to the laser and can result in peeling, redness, and irritation post-treatment. In extreme cases, skin can burn and cause hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) and hypo-pigmentation (lightening of the skin). Let your esthetician know if you’ve used Retin-A or other products with alpha and beta hydroxy acids within the two weeks before receiving treatment.

We offer Coolsculpting, Emsculpt, and RF Microneedling. Call us to book your appointment today.
