We have all heard the “Don’t forget your sunscreen!” statement many times before, but it is for a very good reason. Sunscreen to protect your skin can’t be stressed enough. Most people enjoy tanning, beaches, being outdoors, and just about anything to feel that warm sun on their skin. As good as it might feel, it is not healthy for their skin at all. Sun exposure with no type of protection can be extremely damaging for many reasons.
The main reason it is so important to apply sunscreen is to protect your skin from UV rays. There are actually two different UV rays that cause damage to your skin. The first is ultraviolet A (UVA) which causes premature aging. The second is ultraviolet B (UVB) which is what causes those dreaded sunburns. Your skin naturally contains melanin that protects you from UV rays, but it can only do so much. That is where the layer of sunscreen acts as a shield from the rays to protect your skin even more.
Another reason to use sunscreen is to prevent any signs of premature aging. This is one of the more commonly known side effects of too much or consistent sun exposure with no protection. According to https://ehe.health/, “Studies show that those below age 55 who apply sunscreen regularly have 24 percent less chance of developing these signs of aging than those who don’t.” What happens is it breaks down the collagen in your skin. The result of this includes wrinkles, sagging, discoloration, or that thick leathery look. That is what years of tanning and being in the sun can do to your skin.
Of course, we cannot talk about sun damage and leave out one of the most important ones to be mindful of which is the potential to cause cancer. Take that extra step in your skincare routine to apply a good sunscreen to prevent potential skin cancer from too much sun exposure. Again, the layer of sunscreen prevents the UV light from getting to your skin cells and causing too much damage. There are multiple cancers that are caused by sun exposure. Melanoma is one example of the many.
If we can avoid all of these harmful side effects with such a simple step, why not take the time to do it? It is highly recommended to invest in a good sunscreen now to save yourself damage in the long run.
